Though, not being part of the Python team, I have long followed the project and tried to encourage the team and their work, and I think that they can all be very proud.
The product is not a binding alone, but also a Binding Generator and an API Extractor, which should make it easier to generate bindings for other languages as well as easily bind other Qt libraries, and make them accessibly through Python.

How is this release related to PyQt from Riverside. As I understand, their release is not available under LGPL. Are the two products compatible from a Python developer's standpoint?

As far as I understand the only difference is that you will have to replace PyQt with PySide when doing imports, but there might be some other minor differences.
At least, it has been a design decision from the beginning to have a 1-1 API mapping between PyQt and PySide, though there is talk about exploring a more pythonic API in the future.
I wonder why Nokia hasn't just bought PyQt (and PyKDE) instead of reinventing the weel.
It's still cool, though!!
